Alvar Aalto was a young architect at the height of the Modernist era. In 1925, he married the architect Aino Marsio, whom he brought into his newly established firm. Together, they embarked on a journey that would take them beyond modernism to seek organic and unique solutions for each location. They enjoyed overwhelming success and became global celebrities, but Aino’s untimely death was followed by several years of darkness. Another architect, Elissa Mäkiniemi, appeared in Alvar´s life and took the reins of the studio. The couple married in 1952. This is the story of why and how this family changed the history of architecture and design, becoming ambassadors of Finnish art, the forefathers of Scandinavian design, and some of the most renowned architects and designers of the 20th century.
